Please provide your name, job title and company name.

Yue Hu, Digital Marketing Specialist, CARTERS Building Supplies.

How long have you spent in your current position?

Two years.

What job did you have before your current role?

I have been in the digital marketing industry for the past eight years. My previous job was Digital Marketing Manager at Bosch in China.

To date, what has been your career highlight?

One of my career highlights so far would be joining CARTERS. As a newbie (less than three years) in New Zealand, it was quite challenging to start my career at the beginning – especially as English is not my mother language. But with my academic background (Masters in Marketing), and work experience, I found myself in the New Zealand job market rapidly.

Who have you admired or learnt from the most in your career and why?

I would say my colleagues at CARTERS. I spend most of my time with my team at CARTERS, they teach and help me in my job and even my personal life. I have learnt a lot from them.

Are you doing what you thought you’d be doing when you were younger? If not, what type of job did you expect you would have?

No, not at all. I studied mass communication for my undergraduate degree, and I thought I would be a PR specialist or more event focused. My first role was as a Marketing Assistant in the biggest advertising consulting company in China, but the head of the digital team liked me, so he “borrowed” me to his team. That started my digital marketing career.

What do you think is the most important quality or skill you need to succeed in your current role?

To be target focused. Once you set up and understand the goals of digital campaigns or marketing activities, you need to find the right strategies and solutions. That forces you to learn or research everything to make it happen.

What’s one thing you hope to achieve this year, either at work or in your personal life?

I am looking forward to planning and operating a new social media strategy for CARTERS. In my personal life, it definitely would be WORK HARD, PLAY HARDER 🙂

Do you have any tips or advice for those just starting out in the industry?

1) Solid marketing knowledge background.
2) Willing to try, and CAN-DO attitude.
3) Keep your market sense up to date, not only focus on your industry or your country.
